Community Connect in Traralgon East receives Award nomination

Kindred Spirits is delighted to congratulate and support the wonderful work of our partner Traralgon East Community Centre as finalist in the Victorian Early Years Awards, under the Organisational Category; Creating Collaborative Community Partnerships for their inspiring program Community Connect.

This award is for a service or initiative that promotes collaborative practice to support and demonstrate positive outcomes for children and families.

Traralgon East Community Centre is a place where a range of innovative community activities are held for the local community. The venue and staff inspire children to take part in community life, through its Community Connect program.

After a series of break-ins at the local preschool where the culprits were aged under 10, the centre identified a need to help children make better decisions, setting up the Community Connect Program.

It now runs more than 20 programs designed to attract children and improve their access to services. For example, a new easy-to-navigate public transport map was created. A free book exchange opened. As a result, there has been a reduction in anti-social behaviour.

The program as a whole enables both children and their families to engage in community life, promote positive opportunities, build both individuals & families capacity to make good linkages and connections with their community.

We wish the Traralgon East Community Centre all the luck in the world for Community Connect in the Victorian Early Years Awards at the award ceremony on Tuesday 23 October at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
